Precise positioning in these systems relies on a timing reference that is accurate to the nanosecond: the Temperature-Compensated Crystal Oscillator (TCXO).

Why do GPS and BeiDou insist on such extreme TCXO accuracy?  

Navigation is a “time-of-flight” game: a receiver measures how long satellite signals have traveled, then combines that elapsed time with orbital data to compute position.  

Because radio waves move at the speed of light, a timing error of only 1 µs introduces roughly 300 m of position error.  

Ordinary crystals drift tens of ppm over normal temperature ranges—far too coarse for GPS-class precision.  

A TCXO adds on-die temperature compensation, eliminating temperature-induced drift and giving the receiver a rock-stable clock, which in turn enables metre-level (or better) fixes.
