Buck Regulator Selection for Automotive Cameras AWK6943 vs MP9943 Replacement Path and Parameter Differences

The camera power design already runs on the MP9943, and the task now is to evaluate moving to the AWK6943. The first thing to settle is not the parameter table but three things: whether the gate is cleared, what changes on the board, and which numbers to watch after the swap. The AWK6943 is a domestic automotive-grade synchronous buck from Analogwin; the MP9943 is a long-established MPS part. This article follows that execution order.

Step 1 Three red lines to clear

  1. Input lower limit. The MP9943 operates continuously from 4V to 36V — fine at room temperature, but during cold crank a 12V system can dip below 4V at low-temperature ignition, leaving very little margin for the back end. The AWK6943 starts at 3.0V, a full 1V lower, which gives noticeably more room on both ends of the same battery-droop scenario; this is the main reason it gets pushed for automotive cameras and ADAS. Both top out at 36V, and the AWK6943's absolute maximum input of 42V adds a 6V transient margin, so occasional harness spikes will not destroy the chip outright.

  2. Automotive qualification. The AWK6943 datasheet explicitly states AEC-Q100, meaning it has passed automotive reliability validation and can go straight onto a camera module bill of materials. The MP9943 datasheet carries no automotive qualification marking, so using it on a vehicle requires separate evaluation — the reason many module makers try the AWK6943 first.

  3. Dark-current budget. A camera module keeps drawing power after the vehicle is switched off, and a few milliamps of dark current accumulates into a real drain on the battery. The AWK6943 draws a typical 30μA of operating quiescent current at 12V to 3.3V, 20μA non-switching and 8μA in shutdown — friendly numbers for a vehicle-level dark-current budget.

Only when all three clear is the swap worth pursuing.

Step 2 Five component positions to change

Both are QFN-8 3×3 parts with the same external topology, but the feedback network must change, because the references differ — the AWK6943 uses 1V while the MP9943 uses 0.8V. The comparison scheme published by Analogwin is:

  1. Divider resistor R5: 51kΩ → 0Ω

  2. Divider resistor R8: 7.68kΩ → 24.9kΩ

  3. Divider resistor R7: 41.2kΩ → 100kΩ

  4. VCC capacitor: 0.1μF → 1μF

  5. Boot resistor R4: 20Ω removed, replaced with 0Ω

All changes are resistors and capacitors with no change to the layout topology, so re-spin cost is low — one of the easier domestic replacements to execute. The one rule: it is not a component-only swap.

Step 3 Numbers to watch after the swap

Reference accuracy. The 1V reference holds ±1.5% from -40°C to +125°C, with feedback voltage between 0.985V and 1.015V. Output accuracy directly determines the quality of the sensor supply rail, and a low-drift part avoids image noise jumps during summer heat soak and winter cold start.

RDS(on). The figures are close — the MP9943's 85mΩ/55mΩ is slightly better than the AWK6943's 105mΩ/65mΩ, which at a full 3A load amounts to a few tenths of a watt and needs matching thermal margin.

High-duty-cycle capability. The AWK6943 reaches a 98.5% maximum duty cycle with a 40ns minimum on-time, so it keeps regulating where input and output are close together — exactly what happens while the battery voltage climbs back after cold crank. Peak efficiency is above 95% (12V to 5V), switching frequency 410kHz (350–470kHz), compensation internal.

Protection. Cycle-by-cycle current limiting with hiccup mode retries periodically during overload or output short rather than latching off, and thermal shutdown recovers automatically. UVLO, precision enable and a power-good (PG) output are also included, so power-up sequencing and fault reporting are straightforward.

One trade-off to accept. The MP9943 supports external clock synchronization from 200kHz to 2.2MHz; the AWK6943 does not. If the system relies on synchronization to steer away from a sensitive band, this point needs re-evaluation.

When not to switch

On consumer designs where the input never drops below 4V and automotive qualification is not needed, or where external clock synchronization is required to steer away from a sensitive band, the MP9943's sync feature and lower RDS(on) still hold value — there is no pressing reason to switch. On the other side, anything heading into the vehicle body — cameras, ADAS front or surround modules — needs automotive qualification, cold-crank margin and low dark current, and there the AWK6943 is the steadier choice.

Three things commonly asked after the swap

  • 3A is enough for an automotive camera: a single camera module usually draws under 1A, so 3A covers the combined peak of sensor, ISP and serializer and can also supply merged multi-camera power.

  • Hiccup mode does not cause repeated restarts: it retries periodically during a short or overload and restores output automatically once the fault clears; together with the PG pin the host can read the supply state, so no extra reset circuit is needed.

  • China supply goes through distributors: Analogwin supplies through its distribution channel, Shenzhen Manduic Technology Co., Ltd. is a distributor, and samples and datasheets can be requested through it.
