Active: Features its own oscillation system, so its stability is largely immune to external circuitry. Over the rated voltage range it shows excellent temperature and supply-voltage stability, remaining accurate across wide environmental conditions—ideal for high-precision timing.
Passive: Performance hinges completely on the external circuit: load-capacitor matching, trace layout, etc. Poor design can prevent start-up or cause large frequency drift. On the plus side, external components (e.g., trimmer capacitors) allow fine frequency tuning for applications needing slight adjustments.
3. Performance parameters: high precision vs. economical
Active: Key advantage is tight frequency stability—typically ±10 ppm, with precision grades reaching ±1 ppm—plus low phase noise and high accuracy. Output stays stable despite temperature shifts or supply ripple.
Passive: Lower stability, usually ±20 ppm to ±50 ppm, and more sensitive to temperature. However, it draws less current and costs far less, meeting the modest clock-accuracy needs of consumer electronics.
4. Application scenarios: high-end precision vs. consumer electronics
Active: Used where clock accuracy and stability are critical:
- Communications infrastructure: 5G base stations, fiber-optic gear, satellite-navigation modules.
- Industrial control: automated production lines, precision instruments, CNC systems.

Passive: Dominates consumer and low-cost embedded systems:
