Magntek Magnetic Sensor Empowers High-Precision Position Detection for CNC Machine Tools

In modern CNC machine tools’ precision motion-control systems, high-accuracy position detection is the cornerstone of machining fidelity.  Today’s dominant solutions—optical encoders or resolvers—still suffer from bulky housings, contamination vulnerability and limited shock-and-vibration immunity.  Magnetic sensors, offering contact-free measurement, robust immunity to dirt and oil, and an extremely compact footprint, are rapidly becoming the next-generation feedback element for machine-tool positioning.  Based on Hall or magneto-resistive principles, they sense magnetic-field changes to resolve angular or linear displacement, remaining unaffected by cutting fluid, dust or metallic debris.  While maintaining accuracy within ±0.1°, they simultaneously boost system reliability, making them ideal for high-speed spindles and rotary tables.

Inside CNC systems, an 18-bit high-resolution magnetic sensor handles the mission-critical angle/position feedback.  Its 18-bit digital output delivers a theoretical angular resolution of 0.005° across 360°, an essential prerequisite for micron-level machining precision.  Compared with legacy 12- or 16-bit devices, the advantages are three-fold:

1. Finer resolution enables more accurate servo-motor phase control and higher contouring quality;

2. Faster response satisfies the demands of high-speed, high-precision motion control;

3. Stronger noise immunity guarantees stable signalling inside the electrically noisy cabinet of a machine tool.

On a five-axis machining centre, for instance, the sensor provides real-time, high-fidelity feedback of the swivelling head and rotary-table orientation, closing the position loop for complex free-form surface machining.

Magntek’s MT6825GT-MMD is a high-performance 18-bit magnetic angle sensor that integrates advanced magneto-resistive technology into a compact TSOP-16 package.  Operating from 3.3 V to 5.0 V and across –40 °C to +125 °C, it thrives in the heat and vibration of a CNC shop floor.  Key specifications underline its suitability for machine-tool duty:

- 18-bit resolution yields >260 000 unique positions per revolution, satisfying ultra-high-precision indexing;

- Typical integral non-linearity (INL) is below ±0.5°, ensuring full-scale linearity;

- 20 kHz bandwidth tracks rapid spindle-speed changes in real time.

Higher integration sets it apart from competing devices: on-chip automatic gain control and offset cancellation eliminate complex external signal-conditioning circuitry.  In practice, the MT6825GT-MMD bolts directly to the rear of a servo motor or main spindle, replacing a traditional optical encoder.  Its rugged, sealed design resists ingress of coolant and metallic swarf, cutting maintenance cost and downtime.

As Magntek’s authorised distributor, MANDU provides full-lifecycle support—sensor selection, magnetic-circuit modelling, mounting advice and sample procurement—helping customers integrate and validate performance quickly.

For CNC developers who demand ultimate accuracy and machine reliability, Magntek’s MT6825GT-MMD magnetic sensor delivers the precision, environmental toughness and long-term stability required to upgrade a position-feedback system.  Its non-contact, wear-free operation ensures lifetime consistency, making it a key component for elevating machine performance and market competitiveness.
